The curriculum

Do I have to start at Level One?

Yes, everyone does. This is not a reflection of ability. In order to develop a full understanding, the levels are structured so that each piece of riding technology builds upon the previous. Level One is the start of that process.

I completed Level One/Two/Three ___ years ago, do I need to repeat?

There is no time limit on your progression through the levels. The only thing to consider is whether or not you still remember and understand the material from your previous level. If you’re vague on the information, or can’t remember all the drills and what they were about, it may be best to repeat. If you can recall all the drills, or even better have been riding regularly and applying what you learnt, you should have no problems moving on to the next level. If you’re still unsure, contact our office and they’ll help you determine what’s best.

Is Level One appropriate for complete beginners?

Level One is for anyone that has a licence. If you can let the clutch out without stalling (most of the time) and do the basic control actions on the bike, you’re ready for Level One. Although all riders start at Level One, where possible we try our best to put you in a group of similarly skilled riders so the difference between the fastest and slowest in the group is as small as possible.

Will I need knee sliders / will I get my knee down?

If getting your knee down is your goal, the safest way to go about achieving that is by having your riding fundamentals in place. In other words, understanding and applying the riding technology covered in Level One is the way to make sure it’s your knee that scrapes the ground, and not the rest of your bike. Some people get their knee down, some don’t. Some have done it a thousand times already, and some don’t want to! Whichever category you fall into, the Superbike School will get you moving forward with your riding.

Do I need a motorcycle licence to participate?

The mimimun licence requirement to participate in the California Superbike School is a on road Learner's or a Senior Competition Licence (issued by Motorcycling New Zealand).

Weather

What happens if it rains?

If it rains... we get wet! The drills are just as applicable in the wet as they are in the dry and whatever weather we get on the day is the weather you learn to apply the skills in. We ride, rain or shine.

Gear requirements

Can I hire leathers/riding gear?

Yes, Black Crow Promotions can look after all you gear requirements for the day. Please email your requirements to here gear@californiasuperbikeschool.co.nz

Do I need full leathers?

Yes, you need leather pants and a leather jacket that zip together as a minimum. You will also need a full-face helmet, leather motorcycle gloves and calf-length or higher leather motorcycle boots. If you don’t have your own leathers or other riding gear you can hire them – see Hire Gear for more information.

Motorcycle requirements

Do I need special tyres on my bike or will standard road tyres do?

As we will expect you to ride at 80% or less (so you have enough attention to learn and apply new techniques), standard road tyres are fine as long as they WOF standard.

Do I need to remove or tape my mirrors?

Yes, you will be required to at least tape your mirrors; you can remove them if you choose. Don’t worry if you’re not able to do the taping yourself, we’ll do that for you at scrutineering.

I don't have a sports bike, can I still participate?

Of course! Don’t let the name fool you – the skills taught at Superbike School are applicable to any motorcycle, be it sports bike, tourer, cruiser, naked bike, motard… So don’t be shy. So long as what you’re wanting is to learn the art of cornering, regardless of your bike type, you’re in the right place.

Fuel

How much fuel will I need?

The amount of fuel you use is dependent on the way you ride. As a minimum you should arrive at the track with a full tank. If possible you can bring a jerry can of extra fuel to be on the safe side.

Event schedule

What time do I have to be at the track?

It is imperative you arrive at the circuit by 7.00am sharp – the running of the school day depends on it! Plus, if you turn up late you risk forfeiting your spot for the day.
